Recently, I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation, and I’ve got to say, it’s been an incredible journey!
I wanted to share my experiences and some tips that might help others on their smart home adventures.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was setting up automation between my TCL Roku TV and my receiver. After hours of trial and error, I finally figured out that the key was to ensure the TV and receiver were on the same switched surge protector. This way, when the receiver turns on, it sends a signal to the TV to power up automatically. I also discovered that adding a small delay in the automation script made all the difference! ![]()

Another area I explored was integrating different smart home platforms. I came across Scrypted, which is like Tasker for home automation. It’s amazing how it can bridge the gap between Google Home, Alexa, and HomeKit! If you’re someone who uses multiple ecosystems, this tool is a game-changer. ![]()
I’ve also been experimenting with lighting automation. One thing I’ve learned is to always test your automations manually before setting them to run automatically. This helps catch any issues early on. For example, I set up a routine where my lights dim gradually as the sun sets, creating a cozy atmosphere in the evenings. It’s these small touches that really make a home feel smart! ![]()
If you’re just starting out, my advice is to take it one step at a time. Don’t get overwhelmed by the endless possibilities. Start with one room or one function, and build from there. The sense of accomplishment when you see everything working seamlessly is truly rewarding! ![]()
