Successfully Automating My Standing Desk with SmartThings

I’ve been really excited about integrating my standing desk into my smart home setup, and I’m thrilled to share how I made it happen! :tada:

For those who might be interested, I wanted to trigger my desk to adjust based on certain events—like when I start working or take a break. I knew this would require some clever automation without any electrical work, so I turned to SmartThings to see what I could pull off.

Initially, I thought it might be tricky since my desk doesn’t have built-in smart features. But after some research, I discovered that I could use a smart plug to control the desk’s motor indirectly. By setting up a routine in the SmartThings app, I can now send a signal to the plug, which in turn triggers the desk to move up or down!

Here’s a quick breakdown of what I did:

  • Smart Plug Integration: I connected a smart plug to the desk’s power source. This allows me to control the power supply programmatically.
  • Routine Setup: I created a routine in SmartThings that activates the plug for a short duration when I trigger it. This sends just enough power to the desk to initiate the movement.
  • Custom Scenes: I set up scenes for different positions—like “Work Position” and “Break Position”—so I can easily switch between them using voice commands or the app.

The best part? I didn’t have to modify the desk at all! It was all about leveraging existing smart home tech to create a seamless experience. Now, I can adjust my desk with a simple command or even automate it based on my schedule.

If anyone else is looking to do something similar, I’d be happy to share more details or troubleshoot any issues you run into. Let’s make our smart homes even smarter! :rocket:
