Successfully Automating Outdoor Lighting with Homey

I recently decided to enhance my outdoor lighting setup using my Homey hub, and I wanted to share my experience in case anyone else is looking to do something similar. My goal was to automate my outdoor lights to turn on at sunset and off at sunrise, but I also wanted to add motion detection for added security and convenience.

First, I connected my outdoor lights to Homey using Zigbee. This was straightforward, and I followed the instructions provided in the Homey app. Once the lights were paired, I moved on to setting up the automation rules.

I created a simple script that fetches the sunrise and sunset times using an API. Initially, I encountered some errors when trying to run the script, but after some troubleshooting and referring to the Homey community forums, I figured out that the issue was with the API endpoint. I switched to a more reliable source, and the script started working perfectly.

Here’s a quick rundown of the steps I took:

  1. Pairing Devices: I made sure all my outdoor lights and motion sensors were properly paired with Homey. This was essential for the automation to work seamlessly.

  2. Setting Up the Script: I used the Homey Script editor to fetch the sunrise and sunset times. The script now updates these times daily, ensuring that the lights are always on schedule.

  3. Creating Automation Rules: I set up two rules:

    • Turn on the lights at sunset.
    • Turn off the lights at sunrise.
Additionally, I added motion detection to temporarily brighten the lights when movement is detected, providing an extra layer of security.
  4. Testing and Adjustments: After setting everything up, I tested the system thoroughly. I made sure the lights turned on and off at the correct times and that the motion sensors responded appropriately. A few minor adjustments later, everything worked like clockwork!

This setup has been a game-changer for me. Not only does it provide security, but it also saves energy by ensuring the lights are only on when needed. Plus, the convenience of not having to manually adjust the lights is a huge plus.

If anyone has questions about setting up similar automation or needs help with scripts, feel free to reach out! I’d be happy to share more details or troubleshoot any issues you might encounter.
