Successfully Configuring Smartthings Devices for Regular Updates

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience with configuring Smartthings devices to send periodic updates. It’s been a fascinating journey, and I hope my insights can help others who might be tackling similar challenges!

I’ve been working with a Multipurpose Sensor, a Motion Sensor, and a Water Leak Sensor. Initially, I faced some confusion regarding the expected ZCL report attribute messages after successfully sending a configure reporting request. While one non-Smartthings device behaved as expected, the Smartthings devices showed different behavior, sending Device_annce messages instead. This was a bit puzzling, but I decided to dig deeper into the Zigbee protocol and the specific behaviors of these devices.

After some research and experimentation, I realized that the Device_annce messages were simply notifications of the device joining or rejoining the network, which is standard behavior for Zigbee devices. This understanding helped me reinterpret the messages and focus on the actual report attribute messages I was receiving. It was a great learning experience, and I’m now able to successfully receive regular updates from my Smartthings devices!

I’d love to hear from others who have worked with Smartthings devices and the Zigbee protocol. Have you encountered similar behaviors or found unique solutions to streamline your device configurations? Let’s continue to support each other in this amazing community!

Cheers,
Rahmadi
