Successfully Configuring VPN for Home Assistant Access

I’ve recently gone through the process of setting up a VPN to access my Home Assistant installation from work, and I wanted to share my experience in case it helps others. While the process had its challenges, the end result was incredibly rewarding!

Initially, I faced issues similar to those described in the forums—specifically, being unable to access the Configurator despite the VPN working for other services like Blue Iris. The error message about the policy not being fulfilled was quite puzzling. After some research and trial and error, I realized that the issue might be related to firewall settings on my router or incorrect port forwarding configurations.

I decided to start fresh by ensuring that the necessary ports were correctly forwarded. I also checked my router’s firewall settings to make sure that the VPN traffic wasn’t being blocked. To my relief, after adjusting these settings, I was finally able to access the Configurator without any issues!

This experience taught me the importance of thoroughly checking network configurations when dealing with VPNs and Home Assistant. It also highlighted the value of the community forums, where others have shared their solutions and troubleshooting tips.

If anyone else is struggling with similar issues, I’d recommend starting with verifying your port forwarding settings and firewall rules. Sometimes, the solution is simpler than it seems! I’d love to hear about others’ experiences and tips for maintaining a secure and reliable VPN connection to Home Assistant.

Happy automating everyone! :rocket:
