Successfully Customizing My Aeotec Doorbell Tone

Hey everyone! I wanted to share my recent success with customizing the doorbell tone on my Aeotec Doorbell 6. It’s been a bit of a journey, but I finally got it figured out, and I’m super excited to share my experience with you all.So, first off, I’ve been using the Aeotec Doorbell 6 for a while now, and while it’s a solid device, the default tone just wasn’t doing it for me. I wanted something a bit more personal, something that really fits my home’s vibe. I’ve heard from others that you can customize the tones, but I couldn’t find a clear guide on how to do it, so I decided to dive in and figure it out myself.I started by creating some test items in my openHAB setup. I linked one item to the ‘Sound tone to play’ channel and another to the volume channel. I set up a simple sitemap to control these items, thinking it would be straightforward. When I changed the tone using the dropdown, it worked, but the value kept resetting to the default after a short while. That was pretty frustrating. I couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t sticking. After some research and trial and error, I realized that the issue was with how the device handles the tone selection. It turns out that the Aeotec Doorbell 6 requires the tone number to be set explicitly, and it doesn’t retain the selection automatically. So, I had to find a way to permanently set the tone without it reverting.I stumbled upon a forum post where someone suggested using a rule to set the tone after a certain event. That gave me an idea! I decided to create a rule in openHAB that triggers when the doorbell is pressed, and within that rule, I set the tone to my preferred number. This way, every time someone presses the doorbell, it plays the tone I’ve chosen. Here’s a quick rundown of what I did:1. Identify the Tone Numbers: I found that the Aeotec Doorbell 6 has a range of predefined tones, each assigned a number. I tested each one to find the perfect fit for my home.2. Set Up the Rule: I created a simple rule in openHAB that detects when the doorbell is pressed and immediately sets the tone to my selected number.3. Test and Adjust: I tested the setup several times to ensure it works seamlessly. It’s been a few days now, and the tone stays consistent every time the doorbell is pressed. This small customization has made a big difference in how the doorbell integrates into my smart home setup. It’s these little tweaks that really make a system feel personalized and complete. If anyone else is looking to customize their Aeotec Doorbell 6, I’d be happy to help guide you through the process.
