Successfully Integrating a Video Doorbell with Custom Chimes

After years of using my trusty NuTone IM-4406 system, I decided to upgrade to the Wyze Video Doorbell v2. While the installation process was straightforward, I faced a challenge in integrating it with my existing NuTone chime system. My goal was to retain the familiar chimes without compromising the new doorbell’s functionality.I started by researching online and discovered that the Wyze Chime Controller (WCC) didn’t provide detailed schematics, which was frustrating. As an electrical engineer, I decided to reverse-engineer the system. Through extensive research and testing, I identified the wiring configuration of the WCC and designed a custom solution using a 24VAC relay to mimic the original contact closure of the pushbutton. Here’s how I did it:1. Hardware Setup: I used an OONO DPST relay to connect the WCC to my NuTone system. This relay allowed me to trigger the existing chime module without altering the original wiring significantly.2. Wiring Diagram: I created a detailed wiring diagram to ensure the connection was safe and effective. The relay’s normally open contact was wired into the NuTone base station, enabling the chime to activate when the doorbell was pressed.3. Transformer Considerations: I reused an existing 24VAC transformer that I had installed for the Wyze Video Doorbell v1, ensuring a stable power supply for both the doorbell and the relay.4. Testing and Fine-Tuning: After assembling the components, I tested the setup extensively. It was rewarding to hear the familiar NuTone chimes again, even after years of using the Wyze system.5. Installation and Aesthetics: I mounted the components in a custom-made ABS junction box, ensuring a clean and weatherproof installation. The setup blends seamlessly with my existing infrastructure. This project was a great learning experience and a testament to the power of DIY solutions. It not only preserved the functionality I loved but also enhanced my understanding of home automation systems. If anyone is facing similar challenges, I highly recommend exploring custom solutions and leveraging existing infrastructure.
