After months of research and experimentation, I’m thrilled to share my journey of integrating Control4 with SmartThings. For those who, like me, have been waiting for the Control4 Hub v2 and want to utilize existing Control4 dimmers with SmartThings devices, this guide is for you!
The Setup
I started with a Control4 dimmer in my bathroom, separating the load so the buttons don’t control the actual lighting. This allowed me to use the dimmer buttons to send commands to SmartThings. I paired six Cree Zigbee bulbs with SmartThings since there wasn’t a direct driver available for Control4.
Next, I installed a SmartApp to create an API endpoint and configured it with my SmartThings account. This involved setting up an API token and authorizing the app to control the linked bulbs. I then installed a custom Control4 driver on my main controller and configured it with the API URL and token.
The Outcome
The result? Pressing the dimmer buttons now controls the Cree bulbs, turning them on or off to preset levels. This setup not only works seamlessly but also opens the door to controlling any endpoint in SmartThings via Control4 actions, beyond just lighting.
Why This Matters
For anyone looking to bridge legacy systems with modern smart home ecosystems, this integration is a game-changer. It allows for the reuse of existing hardware while expanding functionality through SmartThings’ extensive capabilities.
Looking Ahead
While this solution requires a dealer for setup and licensing, the potential it unlocks is immense. I’m excited to explore further integrations and hope this guide inspires others to experiment and innovate within their smart home setups.
