I’ve been absolutely thrilled with my journey into the world of Home Assistant, and I’m excited to share a recent success I’ve had with integrating my UniFi cameras with Google Assistant. While the process was a bit of a puzzle at first, the end result has been nothing short of amazing!
My ultimate goal was to have my UniFi camera seamlessly appear in Google Home, allowing me to check in on my pet birds remotely. I had already managed to get my Philips Hue and TP-Link Kasa lights integrated, so I knew the potential was there for the cameras too.
Here’s a quick rundown of what worked for me:
-
Configuration Setup: I started by ensuring my UniFi cameras were properly set up within Home Assistant. This involved connecting to my NVR and making sure all the necessary credentials were in place.
-
Google Assistant Integration: I exposed the camera explicitly in my Home Assistant configuration. It took a bit of trial and error, but tweaking the entity config section in my
configuration.yamlfile was key. -
Testing and Tweaking: After saving the changes, I gave it a few minutes to propagate. The camera still didn’t show up immediately, so I tried restarting both Home Assistant and my Google Home device. Persistence paid off, and voilà! The camera appeared in my Google Home app.
Now, I can simply say, “Hey Google, show me the birds camera,” and there it is, live and in HD. It’s such a convenient way to keep an eye on my feathered friends without having to dig through apps.
I’d love to hear if anyone else has tackled this integration and what their experiences were. Did you face similar hurdles, or did it go smoothly from the start? Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other troubleshoot!
