Successfully Integrating Govee Lights with Matter Protocol in Home Assistant

I recently decided to enhance my smart home setup by integrating my Govee lights using the Matter protocol with Home Assistant. While I’ve been using Govee lights for a while now via Bluetooth, I was excited to explore the potential benefits of Matter for a more seamless and reliable experience. However, the journey wasn’t without its hurdles, and I thought I’d share my experiences and tips in case others are considering a similar setup.

Initially, I was under the impression that Matter would solve all connectivity issues, but it turned out to be a bit more involved than I expected. The setup process required a deeper understanding of IPv6 addresses, which I hadn’t worked with extensively before. My router only supported IPv4 addresses until recently, which was a stumbling block. Once I updated my router to support IPv6, things started to fall into place.

The most challenging part was registering the Govee lights with my Home Assistant server. The process involves using the Govee app to obtain a 12-digit code, which is then entered into the Home Assistant companion app. I had to ensure that the Home Assistant server was properly configured with an admin user, as standard users wouldn’t have the necessary permissions. This step was crucial and required some trial and error to get right.

After overcoming these technicalities, I was pleasantly surprised by the consistency and reliability of the Matter integration. The lights now respond more predictably, and I can control them seamlessly from my phone or through voice commands. It’s been a rewarding experience, and I feel more confident in my smart home setup now.

If you’re considering Matter for your Govee lights, my advice is to take it step by step. Make sure your router supports IPv6 and familiarize yourself with the registration process. It might take a bit of time, but the end result is well worth the effort. Happy integrating!
