Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience integrating Ikea Tradfri devices with SmartThings. I recently purchased the Ikea Wireless Control Outlet kit, which includes a plug socket and a two-button remote. At first, I was a bit concerned about compatibility, as I’ve heard mixed reviews about integrating Ikea devices with third-party systems. However, after some experimentation, I managed to get everything working smoothly!
To start, I paired the outlet with the SmartThings hub by following the instructions in the SmartThings classic app. The process was straightforward: I held the reset button on the outlet until it was detected by the hub. SmartThings recognized the outlet and set it up without any issues. The real challenge came with pairing the two-button remote. I had to reset the remote by pressing the button next to the battery four times, which took a bit of trial and error. Once the remote was paired, it appeared in the app as a main device with two child devices for each button.
I discovered that while the SmartThings app crashes when trying to assign actions directly to the buttons, I can work around this by creating automations in the Smart Lighting section. This allows me to assign specific actions to each button press or hold. For example, pressing button 1 toggles my kitchen lights, while holding button 2 turns off the Ikea outlet. It’s a bit of extra setup, but it works perfectly!
One thing I particularly appreciate about the Ikea Tradfri outlet is its durability. The UK version can handle a full 13A load, which gives me peace of mind knowing it’s reliable for my needs. The two-button remote is also a great design—each button has a different texture, making it easy to distinguish in the dark. Plus, the strong magnet in the base allows me to stick it to any metal surface, which is super convenient.
Overall, I’m really impressed with how well these devices work with SmartThings. They’ve added a new level of functionality to my smart home setup, and I’m already planning to purchase more of these kits in the future.
