Successfully Integrating Jarvis with IFTTT and Philips Hue

I’ve been on a journey to create a smarter home without breaking the bank, and I’m thrilled to share my success with integrating Jarvis alongside IFTTT and Philips Hue lights. While I’m not a tech whiz, my imagination and problem-solving skills have helped me achieve something pretty cool!

My Setup

I started with the SmartThings Starter Kit and linked it with Jarvis, giving me voice control over my devices. I also integrated Teamspeak to communicate with Jarvis remotely, which was a game-changer. Here’s how it all comes together:

  1. Jarvis Integration: I set up Jarvis with custom commands, enabling me to control my smart devices through voice. For instance, saying, “Jarvis, lights on,” triggers an event in Eventghost, which then sends a command via IFTTT to turn my Philips Hue lights on.

  2. IFTTT Magic: Using IFTTT, I created recipes that respond to Jarvis’s commands. This allows me to automate routines without waiting for IFTTT’s usual 15-minute refresh window. It’s almost instantaneous!

  3. Security Alerts: Motion sensors in my home trigger Jarvis to send alerts and activate my security system. It’s comforting to know my place is monitored, even when I’m away.

Challenges and Solutions

  • Communication Delays: Initially, there were delays in communication between Jarvis and IFTTT. I solved this by using Pushbullet to bridge the gap, ensuring commands were sent instantly.
  • Privacy Concerns: I wanted Jarvis to respect my privacy, so I configured it to only respond to specific voice commands and ensure it doesn’t record unnecessary data.

Tips for Others

  • Start Small: Begin with a few devices and gradually add more as you become comfortable.
  • Leverage Free Tools: IFTTT and Jarvis are excellent for creating smart routines without hefty costs.
  • Experiment with Scripts: Eventghost and Pushbullet were key in making my setup responsive and efficient.

Future Plans

I’m excited to expand this setup by adding more motion sensors and integrating my Fitbit scale to track my health metrics. Jarvis could then suggest meals based on my workout data, which would be amazing!
