Hello everyone, I wanted to share my experience in integrating multiple smart home devices using IFTTT and Google Calendar. My journey began when I noticed the potential of automating my home routines, especially with my wife’s flexible work schedule. Here’s how I made it work!

The Challenge
My wife has a company with varying work hours, and we wanted our home to be ready for her clients without manual intervention. After some research, I decided to use IFTTT to trigger our house lights and heating 15 minutes before her first appointment. The goal was seamless automation, and I must say, it’s been a game-changer!

The Setup

  1. IFTTT Integration: I started by installing the IFTTT app and linking it with my Homey account and Google Calendar. This allowed me to create a flow that monitors her calendar events.
  2. Google Calendar Trigger: I set up a trigger in IFTTT to detect upcoming agenda items. The flexibility to choose the trigger time (30 minutes, 15 minutes, or on the dot) was a huge plus. I even added a keyword search to filter specific events, ensuring precision.
  3. Homey Automation: The ‘then’ part of the flow was straightforward—running a pre-set Homey flow to turn on lights and adjust the thermostat. Initially, there was a slight sync delay, but restarting IFTTT resolved it quickly.

The Outcome
This setup has been incredibly reliable. It not only saves us time but also adds a touch of professionalism when clients arrive. The best part? It works effortlessly in the background, requiring minimal maintenance.

Tips for Others

  • Sync Times: Be patient with initial syncs. Restarting IFTTT often helps if flows don’t appear immediately.
  • Keyword Filtering: This feature is invaluable if your calendar has multiple event types. It ensures only relevant triggers activate your flows.
  • Testing: Always test your flows with dummy events to ensure everything works as expected before relying on them fully.
