I’ve been on a journey to create a seamless smart home ecosystem by integrating devices from various brands, and I’m thrilled to share my experience! ![]()
My setup includes Alexa, Google Home, and HomeKit devices, all managed through Home Assistant. Initially, I faced challenges with compatibility, especially with my Unifi Protect cameras and EVA II PRO dehumidifier. However, with some research and experimentation, I found solutions that made everything work smoothly.
For the Unifi Protect cameras, I discovered that while Scrypted was great for quick Alexa integration, Home Assistant offered more robust features. After setting up the cameras in Home Assistant, I was able to integrate them with Google Assistant and HomeKit using the HomeKit Bridge plugin. The only hiccup was with Alexa, where the streams were slow and inconsistent across devices. I learned that adjusting the Home Assistant Cloud settings and using specific emulated Hue configurations helped stabilize the connection.
The EVA II PRO dehumidifier was another puzzle. I wanted to control it through Home Assistant, so I used the MQTT integration alongside the device’s native app. This allowed me to create custom automations, like turning the dehumidifier on when humidity levels exceed 60%.
One of the most rewarding parts of this journey was creating a coffee maker automation. I set up a system that notifies me if the coffee maker turns off unexpectedly, using input_boolean and device_tracker to monitor both the coffee maker and my phone’s location. This ensures I never miss a fresh brew!
I also explored Russian TTS voices for my smart speakers, which was a fun way to add a personal touch to my home setup. After some tweaking, I got it working seamlessly with MaryTTS.
Overall, the key takeaway is that while integrating multiple brands can be challenging, Home Assistant provides the flexibility and power to make it happen. I’m now looking forward to expanding my setup even further and sharing more tips as I go! ![]()
