Successfully Integrating Shelly Devices for Remote Door Access

Recently, I completed a project that integrated Shelly devices into my smart home setup, and I wanted to share my experience with the community. The goal was to create a seamless remote door access system for my garden gate, which I hadn’t been able to achieve with my older setup. Here’s how I approached it and the tools that made it possible.

The Challenge

I have a garden gate with a Eufy doorbell, fully exposed and accessible to everyone. While the doorbell works perfectly, I wanted a way to remotely open the gate using my smartphone. Previously, I relied on an outdated intercom system with a monitor, which I found no longer met my needs. The challenge was to replace this system without having to install physical switches or wires that would complicate the setup.

The Solution

After researching, I decided to use a Shelly device to control the gate opener. I chose the Shelly 1 to handle the switching, which allowed me to integrate it seamlessly into my existing smart home ecosystem. The setup involved connecting the Shelly 1 to the existing wiring of the gate opener, which was a straightforward process once I identified the correct wires.

Integration with Smart Home

To control the Shelly device remotely, I integrated it with my smart home platform. This involved creating a virtual switch within my smart home app, which sends a command to the Shelly device to activate the gate opener. The integration was surprisingly smooth, and I was able to test it successfully within a few hours.

Using Watchman for Configuration Checks

During the setup, I used the Watchman tool, which I recently discovered and have found incredibly helpful. Watchman automatically checks my YAML configuration files for any issues, such as missing entities or services. This tool saved me a lot of time by identifying a misconfigured service that was causing the Shelly device not to respond initially. By fixing the configuration, I ensured that the integration worked flawlessly.

Final Thoughts

This project was a great learning experience and a testament to the versatility of Shelly devices. The ability to control the gate remotely has significantly improved my convenience and security. I highly recommend exploring Shelly devices for similar projects and using tools like Watchman to maintain a clean and efficient smart home setup.

If anyone has questions about integrating Shelly devices or setting up remote access, feel free to reach out! I’d be happy to share more details or troubleshoot any issues you might encounter.
