Hello fellow smart home enthusiasts! I wanted to share my recent experience with integrating my smart devices across different subnets. As many of you might know, organizing devices into separate VLANs or subnets can greatly improve network management, but it can also come with its own set of challenges.
Initially, I faced issues with casting local media to my Google Home devices after setting up different subnets. While I could cast dashboards and Plex content without any problems, local MP3s and TTS wouldn’t play. After some research and troubleshooting, I discovered that setting up an Avahi Daemon for mDNS relay was the key to resolving this issue. It was a bit of a learning curve, but it’s amazing how everything started working seamlessly once the right configurations were in place!
If anyone else is dealing with similar subnet-related issues, I’d highly recommend exploring mDNS solutions. It’s been a game-changer for my setup, allowing me to maintain a clean and organized network while still enjoying all the features my smart devices offer.
