Successfully Integrating SmartThings Water Leak Sensors with Hubitat

After some trial and error, I managed to integrate my SmartThings Water Leak Sensors (STS-WTR-250) with Hubitat! Here’s how I did it and what I learned along the way.

The Challenge

I have several SmartThings Water Leak Sensors placed under sinks and toilets. When I decided to switch to Hubitat, I was worried about losing these crucial sensors. Resetting them didn’t help initially—they wouldn’t show up during device discovery.

The Solution

After some research and troubleshooting, I found that the key was to ensure the sensors were in pairing mode while Hubitat was scanning for new devices. Here’s a step-by-step guide that worked for me:

  1. Reset the Sensor: Press and hold the sensor’s button until the LED starts flashing.
  2. Open Hubitat: Go to the Hubitat app and navigate to the device discovery section.
  3. Pair the Sensor: While Hubitat is scanning, press and hold the sensor’s button again until you see a confirmation on the Hubitat app.
  4. Assign to Room: Once paired, assign the sensor to the appropriate room for easier management.

Tips for Success

  • Timing is Everything: Make sure the sensor is in pairing mode exactly when Hubitat starts scanning.
  • Check Signal Strength: Ensure there’s no interference between the sensor and the Hubitat hub.
  • Be Patient: Sometimes it takes a few attempts, but persistence pays off!

Why This Matters

Having these water leak sensors integrated into Hubitat gives me peace of mind. I can now monitor my home’s water safety alongside all my other smart devices in one seamless ecosystem. Plus, it’s satisfying to repurpose existing hardware instead of buying new sensors!
