Successfully Integrating Z-Wave Plus Devices with SmartThings

I recently decided to transition my Z-Wave network to SmartThings as my primary hub, while keeping my Qolsys IQ Panel 2+ as a secondary hub. Initially, I encountered some challenges with my Z-Wave Plus devices not syncing properly on SmartThings. After some research and experimentation, I found a reliable solution that I’d like to share with the community.

The Challenge

My Z-Wave Plus devices, such as my GE Z-Wave Plus switches and my Logitech Harmony Elite Remote, were not showing up correctly on SmartThings. While my non-Z-Wave Plus devices like my Yale door lock and 2Gig thermostat worked seamlessly, the Z-Wave Plus devices either showed up as unknown or didn’t function as expected.

The Solution

After some digging, I realized that the issue was related to how SmartThings handles Z-Wave Plus devices. Here’s what I did to resolve the problem:

  1. Firmware Update: I started by ensuring that all my Z-Wave Plus devices were running the latest firmware. This step alone resolved some of the compatibility issues.
  2. SmartThings Hub Settings: I checked the hub settings on SmartThings and made sure that Z-Wave was enabled and set to the highest priority.
  3. Re-adding Devices: For the devices that still didn’t work, I removed them from the network and re-added them one by one. This process ensured that each device was properly paired with the SmartThings hub.
  4. Using SmartThings Routines: Once all devices were properly synced, I started creating routines to automate my home. For example, I set up a routine where my GE Z-Wave Plus switches dim the lights when I press the Harmony Elite Remote’s media button.

The Outcome

The result has been fantastic! My Z-Wave Plus devices now work seamlessly with SmartThings, and I’ve been able to create some really useful home automation routines. I’ve also noticed that the integration with my Harmony Elite Remote has been much smoother, which has greatly enhanced my overall user experience.

Tips for Others

If you’re encountering similar issues, here are a few tips:

  • Always check for firmware updates for your devices.
  • Ensure that your SmartThings hub settings are optimized for Z-Wave.
  • Don’t hesitate to remove and re-add devices if they’re not working correctly.
  • Take advantage of SmartThings’ robust automation features to create routines that suit your lifestyle.

I hope this experience helps others who are looking to integrate Z-Wave Plus devices with SmartThings. It’s been a learning process, but the end result has been well worth the effort!
