Hi everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience migrating a medium-sized OpenHAB setup from version 2.5 to 3.3. While the process was mostly smooth, I encountered some interesting challenges with the Z-Wave integration that I thought might be helpful to discuss.
The setup includes around 40 Z-Wave nodes alongside a primarily KNX-based system. After the migration, most Z-Wave functionality worked as expected, but I noticed a few recurring issues. The first was the appearance of ‘UFO’ nodes, which would randomly appear in the logs with different IDs. This was a bit concerning as it seemed like the binding was picking up stray messages or perhaps some form of interference.
Another issue was the repetitive ‘received command’ logs for the same device within a short timeframe. It looked like the binding was processing the same command multiple times, which I initially thought might be a timing issue or a bug in the new version. Additionally, there were instances where a meter’s value would spike and then return to normal within a second, which was puzzling given the security measures in Z-Wave.
After some troubleshooting, I realized that these issues were relatively rare, affecting only about 2% of the messages. I tried clearing the cache, restarting the system, and even re-pairing some devices, but the problems persisted. However, I did notice that the majority of Z-Wave messages were being handled correctly, which was reassuring.
One thing I found particularly useful was the community’s advice on monitoring logs and understanding error patterns. It helped me identify that most issues were transient and didn’t significantly impact the overall system performance. I also learned the importance of keeping backups and being patient during major version upgrades.
If anyone else has gone through a similar migration or has tips for handling Z-Wave quirks, I’d love to hear your experiences! It’s always great to learn from others’ journeys. ![]()
