Successfully Reusing Old Wifi Points as Google Nest Wifi Devices

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience with reusing some old Google Wifi points as Nest Wifi devices. It’s been a great way to repurpose old hardware and improve my home’s connectivity! Background: I had 7 old Google Wifi points lying around, and while they were functional, their connections were unstable. This was particularly problematic for my work, as I rely heavily on Zoom calls throughout the day. The kids’ devices would often kick me off during important meetings, which was incredibly frustrating. The Solution: After some research, I decided to upgrade my network with a TP-Link Deco AX5400 system. The setup was straightforward, and I was able to reuse the same network name and password, making the transition seamless for everyone in the house. Reusing the Old Points: What I didn’t expect was how easy it was to repurpose the old Google Wifi points. I reset them and set them up as Nest Wifi points. Here’s how I did it: 1. Reset the Old Points: I performed a factory reset on each of the old Google Wifi points. This was essential to ensure they could be integrated into the new system. 2. Setup as Nest Wifi Points: I plugged one of the points into a power source and waited for it to start up. The Google Home app automatically detected it and prompted me to add it as a Nest Wifi point. I repeated this process for the remaining points. 3. QR Code Scan: The setup process involved scanning a QR code on each point using my phone. This was a smooth and quick step. 4. Virtual Home Setup: I came across a tip about creating a virtual home in the Google Home app, which helped manage the new and old devices seamlessly. While I didn’t fully utilize this feature, it was reassuring to know it was an option. Unexpected Benefits: One of the points gave me a pleasant surprise by speaking to me during setup, which I found both amusing and helpful. It made the process feel more interactive and user-friendly. Conclusion: I’m thrilled with how this project turned out. Not only did I improve my home’s Wi-Fi reliability, but I also found a new use for old hardware. This setup has been a lifesaver for my work and family life alike. If anyone else is considering a similar upgrade, I highly recommend exploring the option of repurposing old Wifi points. It’s a cost-effective way to enhance your connectivity without letting old devices go to waste. Thanks to the community for all the helpful tips and guides that made this possible! :raised_hands:
