Hi everyone, I wanted to share my recent success in setting up my Apple HomePod as a Thread Border Router in Home Assistant. I’ve been exploring the integration of Thread into my smart home setup and was curious about leveraging my existing Apple devices for this purpose.
Initially, I faced some challenges. While my HomePod was recognized by Home Assistant, configuring it as a border router wasn’t straightforward. After some research, I discovered that enabling the necessary settings required accessing the device’s REST API endpoint. This was a bit tricky, but with some guidance from community forums, I managed to locate the correct URL and configure everything properly.
I also explored alternative solutions, such as using Eve smart plugs as Thread routers. However, I found that integrating them seamlessly into Home Assistant required a bit more setup. The HomeKit integration worked smoothly, but I wanted everything under one roof, so to speak, within Home Assistant.
The moment when everything connected and my Thread network was up and running was truly rewarding. It’s fantastic to see how well Apple devices can work alongside Home Assistant, especially with the right configuration. I’m now able to manage all my Thread devices effortlessly from the Home Assistant interface, which has significantly enhanced my smart home experience.
If anyone else is looking to do something similar, I’d be happy to share more details or tips. It’s a learning process, but the payoff is well worth it. Thanks to the supportive community here, I was able to navigate through the initial hurdles and get everything set up smoothly. Happy threading everyone! ![]()
