Successfully Setting Up Water Meter Monitoring with AMR2MQTT

Hi all, I wanted to share my recent experience setting up water meter monitoring using AMR2MQTT with Home Assistant. It was a bit of a learning curve, but I’m thrilled with the results! :ocean:

After setting up HA on my Raspberry Pi 5 last year, I decided to take it a step further by adding a rtl-sdr device to monitor my Neptune R900i water meter. The goal was to track water usage and get notifications if there was a leak. The installation process took about 8 hours over two days—mostly due to the steep learning curve of HA’s configuration. At one point, I almost switched to Linux to simplify things, but I’m glad I stuck with HA!

One challenge I faced was setting up an automation to notify me if the water leak flag stayed at ‘1’ for 12 hours. The error message about a malformed message was confusing at first, but after some trial and error, I figured out the issue with the automation’s YAML configuration. It was a great learning experience, and I appreciate the community for maintaining such a robust platform.

Now that everything is up and running, I can monitor my water usage in real-time and rest assured that I’ll be alerted if there’s a leak. It’s amazing how technology can help us be more mindful of our resource usage. :potable_water:感激之情溢于言表,感谢HA社区的支持!

If anyone else is looking to set up similar monitoring, I’d be happy to share my configuration details or troubleshoot any issues. Happy automating! :rocket:
