Summer Mode Automation Tips and Tricks

Summer is here, and automating our homes to handle the warmer months can make life so much easier! I’ve been experimenting with different systems to keep my home comfortable without breaking the bank. One thing I’ve noticed is how different systems handle summer mode. For instance, my son uses a Netatmo system, and it’s fascinating how the connected valves calibrate every two weeks, even when the thermostat is off. This prevents the thermostatic heads from getting calcified or stuck, which is a common issue if the valve is fully closed for months. It’s such a clever way to maintain the system without manual intervention!

On the other hand, with Tado, I’ve had to manually set my programming to keep the valves open during the summer. I turn them to 25 degrees and then turn off my boiler, which doesn’t have a summer mode. This process is a bit of a hassle, especially when winter rolls around again. I wonder if there’s a smarter way to handle this without so much manual work. The Netatmo system seems to have a more seamless approach, and I can’t help but think Tado could implement something similar.

Another interesting point I’ve come across is data management. I recently moved and set up a new HA instance. I migrated over 150GB of data and around 10,000 photos from my recovery, but then I noticed the backup folder was missing. After some digging, I realized the recorder in HA was the culprit. It was monitoring the database and system integrity, which I guess led to the backup being deleted. I ended up doing a clean install, which was a bit stressful, but it taught me the importance of regular backups and understanding the tools I’m using.

When it comes to automation, I’ve been exploring motion sensors for outdoor lighting. I have five motion sensors set up for my aquaponic system, and they work great at first. But after a day or so, they just stop responding. They get stuck on whatever state they were in last. Removing and resetting them helps for a short while, but the problem always comes back. I’m curious if others have experienced this and if there’s a solution out there. It’s frustrating because all my other sensors are working perfectly fine.

I also wanted to touch on the importance of firmware updates. I recently upgraded my demo kit’s firmware, and it wiped out all my data records. It’s a bit disheartening when you lose all that data, especially if it’s for a presentation. I’m wondering if there’s a way to import demo firmware again to restore some data without going through the whole setup process. It would save a lot of time and hassle.

In terms of lighting control, I’ve been researching Square Connect for my home theater. The Vera 2 has been a good temporary solution for my Z-Wave network, but I’m looking forward to the new Pro version of the SQ Blaster. The idea of controlling both A/V and lighting from an iPad sounds amazing. I’ve set up some basic rules with Vera, like turning on lights when motion is detected at the bottom of the stairs, but I’m eager to dive deeper into more complex automations. I’d love to hear how others have integrated Vera with their systems, especially with security setups.

Overall, summer is a great time to fine-tune our smart home setups. Whether it’s handling the heat, managing data, or exploring new automation possibilities, there’s always something to learn and improve. If anyone has tips or experiences to share, I’d love to hear them! Let’s make this summer the most comfortable one yet with our smart home gadgets. :sun_with_face:
