Syncing SmartThings Automations Across Devices: My Experience

Recently, I decided to integrate my SmartThings hub with my existing Alexa ecosystem, which already boasts a variety of smart home devices from different brands. The goal was to create seamless automations that would enhance my daily life. I started by setting up a couple of automations using my Samsung Note 9. One automation turns on a dedicated lamp in my living room and sends me a text message when my garage door opens. Another turns the lamp off when the garage door closes. These were designed to provide a visual reminder if I accidentally left the garage door open.

I also created a third automation on my Samsung tablet that activates nearly every smart device in my house if the garage door opens during specific hours. The idea was to ensure I’m alerted if the garage door opens unexpectedly. However, I encountered a challenge: the automation created on my tablet wasn’t visible on my phone. This led me to question whether automations sync automatically across all devices logged into the same SmartThings account.

After some research and trial and error, I discovered that while automations are tied to your SmartThings account, they don’t automatically sync across all devices. Instead, each device must manually add the automation. This realization was both frustrating and enlightening. It highlighted the importance of understanding how automations are managed within the SmartThings ecosystem.

To streamline the process, I found that organizing my automations in the SmartThings app on one device and then manually adding them to other devices was the most reliable method. This approach ensures consistency across all my devices without relying on automatic syncing, which wasn’t functioning as I initially expected.

This experience taught me the value of thorough testing and understanding the nuances of different smart home platforms. It also underscored the importance of clear documentation and community support in troubleshooting such issues. If anyone has tips or tricks for managing automations across multiple devices, I’d love to hear them!

Happy automating!
