T2 Relay latency

Hi everyone,

I’d like to share my setup and see if anyone has experienced something similar or can provide some insight.

I’ve installed several Aqara T2 modules to control two simple lighting circuits (single switches, no two-way switching). The installation works correctly overall:

  • The relay turns the lights on/off without issues from the app.
  • The physical wall switches also work as expected.

However, I’m noticing a fairly noticeable latency when using the physical switches, to the point where it becomes a bit uncomfortable in daily use.

My current setup:

  • Hub: Aqara M2
  • Connectivity: Zigbee
  • The T2 modules are installed inside standard wall boxes (not in a metal electrical panel)
  • Using traditional toggle switches (not momentary/push buttons)
  • I’ve tested both with and without load detection enabled

My main questions:

  1. Is this level of latency normal for the T2, or should it be closer to instant?
  2. Could this be related to Zigbee network quality (coverage, signal strength, routing)?
  3. Does adding Zigbee routers (e.g., Aqara smart plugs) significantly improve response time?
  4. Does wiring type (load detection vs direct switch input to the module) have a big impact?
  5. Are there any firmware settings or configuration tweaks that can reduce latency?

Any feedback or real-world experiences would be greatly appreciated, especially from users who have compared Aqara modules with devices like Shelly.

Thanks in advance!

This is by design unfortunately, I have the same issue where there is roughly around 0.5 second delay.

I got over the problem using the Aqara Wireless Remote Switch H1

I removed the light switch and just WaGo’s the connection inside and then placed the Wireless H1 in place of the original switch. I then configured the switch to trigger the relays.

Probably not what you want to hear but there is no other way.

Alternatively you could replace the light switch with a H1 EU they do Neutral & No Neutral versions but as you have a T2 relay you would want the H1 EU (With Neutral) Double Rocker switch which is basically a relay attached to the switches.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I was trying to keep the T2s, sad to hear the latency is by design. I’ve been using Shelly 2 too and they have zero delay.

I think the latency is there because of the way they have designed the inputs to be decoupled from the relay and used in automations.

Hello, let’s hope that Aqara will start developing a new relay adapted to Thread.

Just thank God you didn’t connect the relays to either an m100 or m200.

These have a built-in noticeable delay or lag when switching lights. When I quizzed Aqara they didn’t give me a discernible answer.

Both these new hubs are shockingly bad when switching lights that are connected to them, there’s like a half second delay and it’s horrible.

If you took that delay inbuilt along with the delay of a T2 relay switch sensing, then it would become almost unusable.
