The Matter camera plan of Aqara

Hello friends

We are pleased to announce that the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has finally released the Matter 1.5 standard supporting cameras. As a steadfast supporter of Matter, Aqara is committed to investing resources in developing and supporting this protocol. We anticipate launching relevant products in the near future. Below is a brief overview of Aqara’s Matter Camera plan.

Since the standard has just been released, we need to carefully study the various specification definitions of Matter Camera. We are delighted to see that the new standard’s streaming service is based on WebRTC, which is natively supported on Aqara cameras—this will save us significant development time.

Undoubtedly, we will prioritize integrating this protocol into new products, though I cannot disclose which specific model it is at this time. We will gradually conduct upgrade evaluations for those older cameras only after the Matter functionality of the new model matures. If an older Aqara camera cannot support Matter due to exhausted hardware resources (for example, some Aqara cameras already consume significant hardware resources to support HomeKit, and users of these cameras are currently using iCloud cloud storage services—we cannot force them to discontinue HomeKit service to update to Matter), we will postpone its Matter support plan and announce an explanation until a new solution becomes available.

Matter is a system-level application protocol. In addition to cameras requiring integration of the corresponding Matter SDK, apps also need to be updated. As far as we know, no brand or ecosystem has officially announced a timeline for their apps to support Matter. Therefore, even after launching Matter Cameras, it will still be some time before users can truly experience the openness of Matter.

Matter is a decentralized and open ecosystem protocol, meaning that services with strong private attributes such as video cloud storage cannot be defined as part of its standard specifications. If you are accustomed to using cloud video storage services, Matter will have little value for you. We hope every user is aware of these details.

Regarding the topic of Matter Camera, do you have any other thoughts or suggestions? We welcome discussions in the comment section.

Thanks @Aqara_PM_Donie Donie for this statement and clarifying it. We (and me :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:) waiting eagerly for the Matter support for cams!
So hopefully it will be available soon and the process is not to difficult for you and your team!
What cam do you suppose will be the first? G5?

Why not do what Eve did with regard to HomeKit and Matter? If you bought a HomeKit device you can continue with HK but once you migrate to Matter there is no turning back. That way you provide the option for customers.

It’s great that the Matter protocol is including more and more types of devices. The funny thing about the explanation, if I understood correctly, is that for example if you add a camera through Matter it seems that it will not be possible to use cloud systems such as ICloud Security Video? If so, someone could explain to me why.

Thanks for the clarification @Aqara_PM_Donie we look forward to new cameras with matter in the future. :oucjnda5i4sry8ki39y3dm_62: :omzdu6fxikcn5wgqqcyj9q_62:

@Aqara_PM_Donie Keep up the good work. Good to see the commitmet from Aqara. Although it is not aleays easy with so many products. Really looking forward to see it in cameras. Any breakdown on which will be likely to get support?

I just hope that the existing cameras(at least camera hubs) and hubs will be updated to Matter 1.5.

It would be great if the Aqara G4 Doorbell is upgraded to Matter, if not I will be looking forward to a new Aqara Doorbell which is 4K video and supporting Matter!!

Great to hear that, there is no surprise while reading this as I know you guys are always at the first in the list of few companies that develop new innovative products. Thanks for sharing updates on Matter 1.5 and also about your plans for integration in to the camera line.

@AqaraOfficial hope you are making 4k camera.
As 4k camera is new standard for IP camera.
Special for outdoor camera for better tracking and clear visibilities. Looking for to new generation of aqara 4k camera with local AI support.

As I mentioned in the article, Matter was designed by CSA as a decentralized, cloud server independent standard that essentially ensures maximum protection of user privacy while also being open. In the future, Aqara’s Matter Camera will allow users to access Aqara Home and enjoy cloud storage services. At the same time, you can also connect the camera to other Matter Apps for use. If you only connect on the same LAN, you only need the Matter App and Matter Camera. Once you need to remotely access the Matter camera at home through the Matter App, you will also need a Matter Controller device produced by the manufacturer of the Matter App (similar to the Home Hub in HomeKit), but they will work separately from the cloud server.

I’m excited to see how the new Aqara Matter Cameras (and Doorbells) will take advantage of the clusters available in the 1.5 update and how the Aqara app will support third party Matter Cameras (4K, PTZ control and spotlights for example).

Really great to see that Aqara is once again among the first when it comes to Matter support. Looking forward to more details and see when the various ecosystems street adding support as well

Yes, this is an ideal situation, and keeping HomeKit and Matter in the same camera is our goal. As I mentioned in the article, HomeKit mainly consumes DDR hardware resources. For Aqara, once we promise that a camera can support both HomeKit and Matter at the same time, we will first confirm whether its DDR resources meet the needs of both features working simultaneously. Otherwise, we can only keep one of them.

Specifically, what is your plan regarding Hub camera G3?

@Aqara_PM_Donie I assume that a Metter controller like the Aqara Hub M3 also needs to be updated to Matter 1.5?

Currently, it is not possible to see which version of Matter and Thread the Aqara hub supports. Can I suggest to display the version in the Aqara app?

Tha is great news. I was just about to go Hikvision. I hope you introduce AI assisted PTZ camera that can recognize various objects and act accordingly. But first and foremost - using PTZ, tracks the object as it moves.

Great to hear! I’d love to see Matter Camera support added to the Video Doorbell Camera Hub G410 in due course.
