Hey everyone! I’ve recently started diving into the world of Home Assistant and I’m absolutely loving it. One of my first projects has been creating a custom dashboard to monitor my home’s security, and I must say, it’s been an exciting journey. However, I’ve hit a bit of a snag that I could really use some help with.
So, here’s the deal: I have a bunch of window and door sensors set up around my house. They’re working perfectly fine—when a window is open, it shows as ‘open’, and when it’s closed, it shows as ‘closed’. But what I really want is a bit more granular information. Specifically, I’d love to know how long each window or door has been open. You know, for those times when you’re not sure if you left a window open for five minutes or five hours!
I’ve played around with the ‘last_changed’ and ‘last_updated’ attributes that come with the binary sensors, but honestly, they just don’t give me the insight I’m looking for. I need something that clearly shows the duration the window has been open, not just the timestamp of the last change.
I’m hoping someone out there has tackled this before or has some clever workaround. Maybe there’s a way to use automations or a specific integration that can track this information? I’m all ears for any suggestions!
On a lighter note, I can’t help but be amazed by how customizable Home Assistant is. It really feels like the possibilities are endless, and I’m just scratching the surface. I can’t wait to see what other cool projects I can come up with!
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer. Let’s make this dashboard even smarter together! ![]()
