Transforming a Piano into a Smart Desk with Wyze Sense and Alexa

I recently completed an exciting project that combines my love for music and technology—converting an old piano into a smart desk! The highlight of this project is the integration of Wyze Sense contact sensors with Alexa to control LED lighting. Here’s how I did it and what I learned along the way.

First, I mounted Wyze Sense contact sensors on the piano pedals. These sensors detect when the pedals are pressed, and I used them to trigger the LED lights. To make it even smarter, I set up Alexa routines so that pressing a pedal not only turns the lights on but also adjusts their brightness based on the intensity of the press.

Initially, I tried using IFTTT to automate the lighting, but it wasn’t as reliable as I hoped. That’s when someone suggested using Alexa routines, and it worked like magic! I was amazed at how seamlessly everything integrated.

One challenge I faced was ensuring the sensors were sensitive enough to detect subtle presses but not so sensitive that they triggered accidentally. After some trial and error, I found the perfect balance by adjusting the sensitivity settings in the Wyze app.

This project has been a huge success, and my wife loves how practical and beautiful the desk is. It’s a great example of how smart home technology can enhance everyday objects. If you’re looking to add some flair to your workspace, I highly recommend exploring similar projects!

For anyone interested in replicating this, here are some tips:

  • Choose LED lights with a wide brightness range for better control.
  • Test your sensors in different lighting conditions to ensure reliability.
  • Don’t hesitate to experiment with Alexa routines to find the perfect setup.

I’m really proud of how this turned out, and I’m already brainstorming my next smart home project! If you have any questions or want more details, feel free to ask.
