Starting a smart home project in an old house is both exciting and challenging!
I’ve been working on integrating various devices to modernize my space, and it’s been a journey of learning and discovery. ![]()
One of the first things I tackled was setting up a reliable network. I found that using a mesh Wi-Fi system provided better coverage throughout the house, especially in areas where older walls and thick insulation can be a problem. ![]()
Next, I focused on lighting. I installed a mix of Philips Hue and Lutron Caseta bulbs, which have been fantastic. The ability to control them via voice or app has made my daily routine much easier. ![]()
However, I did run into some compatibility issues with my Zigbee devices. After some research, I discovered that running Deconz alongside OpenHAB on a Raspberry Pi was the solution. Using Docker made the installation process smoother, and now everything works seamlessly! ![]()
I also wanted to automate my heating system. Replacing the old thermostat with a smart one from Tado allowed me to control the temperature remotely and set schedules. It’s been a game-changer for energy efficiency! ![]()
For security, I added a few Wyze cameras and motion sensors. They integrate well with my existing setup, and the motion detection has been spot on. ![]()

One thing I’m still experimenting with is scene automation. I’d love to create routines that adjust lighting, temperature, and music based on the time of day or my activities. It’s a work in progress, but I’m excited to see how it evolves! ![]()
Overall, this project has been a great learning experience. It’s amazing how technology can transform a space, making it more comfortable and efficient. Thanks to the smart home community for all the tips and support! ![]()
If anyone has tips on improving automation or suggestions for devices, I’d love to hear them! Let’s keep the conversation going! ![]()
