Transforming My Camper Van into a Smart Home

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent project of turning my camper van into a smart home using Home Assistant. It’s been an exciting journey, and I thought I’d walk you through how I did it and some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

First, I started with the basics—installing sensors and switches. I went with a combination of Shelly devices and some Fibaro sensors. The Shellys were great because they’re easy to install and integrate seamlessly with Home Assistant. I set up motion sensors in the main living area and door sensors for the van’s entry points. It was a bit of a challenge figuring out the best placement for everything, especially in such a compact space, but it’s paid off in terms of functionality.

One of the highlights has been automating the lighting. I installed a mix of RGBW strips and spotlights, all controlled through Home Assistant. I set up scenes for different times of the day—like a cozy evening mode with warm lighting and a brighter daylight mode. It’s amazing how much these small adjustments can enhance the living experience.

I also integrated my existing smart devices, like my Amazon Echo Dot, into the system. Using routines has made everything run smoothly. For example, when I open the van’s door in the morning, it automatically turns on the lights, starts the coffee machine, and plays some music. It’s these little touches that make it feel like a real home.

Of course, there were some bumps along the way. The biggest challenge was getting everything connected and ensuring reliable Wi-Fi coverage throughout the van. I ended up installing a small router specifically for the smart devices, which solved most of the connectivity issues. I also had to do a bit of troubleshooting with some of the sensors, but the Home Assistant community was super helpful with tips and advice.

Overall, I’m really happy with how it’s turned out. It’s not just about having gadgets; it’s about creating a space that’s comfortable, efficient, and tailored to my needs. I’d love to hear if anyone else has done something similar or has tips for improving the setup further. Let’s keep the smart home projects rolling!

Cheers,
