Hi everyone! I’ve been working on a project that I’m really excited about, and I wanted to share my experience with you all. The goal was to turn my traditional wired doorbell into a smart doorbell using WiFi and integrate it with Home Assistant. Here’s how it all came together!
The WiFi Doorbell I created hooks up directly to my existing wired doorbell system. When someone presses the doorbell, the WiFi Doorbell detects the signal and sends an MQTT message to Home Assistant. From there, I’ve set up an automation that sends a notification to my phone. What’s even cooler is that the notification includes a live feed from my front door camera, giving me a clear view of who’s there without having to get up!
Another feature I added is battery monitoring. The WiFi doorbell sends the battery voltage level in a JSON message along with the MQTT message. I’ve configured a sensor in Home Assistant to track this, so I always know when it’s time to change the batteries.
I’d love to hear if anyone else has tried something similar or has any tips to improve this setup. It’s been a fantastic project, and I’m really happy with how it turned out! ![]()
