Transforming My Living Room Lighting with Smart Tech

I’m thrilled to share my recent project transforming the lighting in my living room, integrating everything into my SmartThings network via Z-Wave. This was a one-day project with the help of my mom and brother, and I’m absolutely thrilled with the results!

Project Overview
I decided to upgrade from an old, underwhelming ceiling fan setup to a modern, energy-efficient lighting system. The goal was to create a brighter, more spacious feel while integrating smart controls. I opted for Cree LED 65W equivalent lights (5000K color temperature) paired with H4 recessed cans and GE Z-Wave dimmers. The total cost was around $500, mostly invested in the LED lights and dimmers.

Installation Process

  1. Planning and Drilling: With the ceiling being 1/2 drywall, we carefully planned the placement of each light to ensure adequate clearance in the attic. A 6 3/8" drill bit was used to create the necessary holes, adjusting a few placements for optimal aesthetics.
  2. Light Installation: Installing the recessed cans and wiring was straightforward. After ensuring everything was correctly wired in the attic, we connected everything to the junction box and the Z-Wave dimmer.
  3. Smart Integration: The GE Z-Wave dimmers were seamlessly integrated into my SmartThings hub, allowing for easy control via the app.

Results and Impressions
The difference is night and day! The room now feels significantly larger and brighter. The 5000K bulbs provide a crisp, natural light that makes the walls and colors pop. Plus, the dimmers offer smooth, precise control, perfect for setting the mood.

Personal Touch
It was a fun project to tackle, and the best part was surprising my wife with the upgrade when she returned from a work trip. She loves the new setup, and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out!

If you’re considering a similar upgrade, I highly recommend exploring Z-Wave dimmers and quality LED lights. It’s a fantastic way to modernize your space while enhancing functionality. Happy DIY-ing! :rocket:
