Transforming Smart Home Control with Affordable Android Devices

I’ve been experimenting with using low-cost Android devices as smart home controllers, and I wanted to share my findings and experiences with the community. This approach has been a game-changer for me, and I hope it can inspire others to explore similar solutions.

The Setup

I purchased three LG Transpyre phones from Best Buy, each costing just $30. These devices have proven to be surprisingly capable for their price. They run on Android 5.1.1 and have been optimized to serve as dedicated smart home controllers. Here’s how I configured them:

  1. Airplane Mode with WiFi: This ensures minimal battery drain while maintaining connectivity.
  2. Immersive Mode: Using the free Power Toggle app, I’ve hidden the status bar and soft navigation buttons, maximizing screen real estate.
  3. Smart Tiles Integration: I set up a custom dashboard using Smart Tiles, linked to my SmartThings account. This allows me to control lights, thermostats, and other devices seamlessly.
  4. Shortcut Creation: I saved the dashboard URL as a shortcut on the home screen, enabling instant access without any swipe or unlock actions.

The Experience

The result has been nothing short of impressive. The devices wake up with a double-tap, displaying the dashboard immediately. After 30 seconds of inactivity, they power off, conserving battery life. The battery life is exceptional, especially when configured optimally.

Customization and Flexibility

One of the most exciting aspects is the ability to customize the dashboard. I’ve created room-specific dashboards, making navigation intuitive. The devices are placed strategically in areas where we spend the most time, enhancing accessibility and convenience.

Battery Life and Performance

Battery life has exceeded my expectations. The devices are quick to respond, with no noticeable lag, even when handling multiple automation tasks. This setup has significantly contributed to the Wife Approval Factor (WAF) in our home.

Integration with Other Systems

I’m currently exploring the integration of a Harmony Hub, which I purchased on eBay for $55. The goal is to fully integrate this into my SmartThings ecosystem, enhancing control over entertainment systems and home automation.

Conclusion

This setup has been a fantastic way to extend smart home control without breaking the bank. It’s a testament to how creativity and cost-effective solutions can enhance our daily lives. I’d love to hear how others are utilizing similar devices or alternative solutions for smart home control!

Happy automating!
