Triggering Activities with Family Phones' IP Addresses

Hi everyone! I’m really excited to share my idea about using my family’s phone IP addresses to trigger activities in Vera. I stumbled upon this while exploring Reactor, and I think it could be a game-changer for my smart home setup. Here’s my thought process and some questions I have:

I’ve been using Vera for a while now, and I love how it integrates with my devices. However, one thing that’s been bugging me is getting my family on board with using the Vera app. They’re hesitant, and I don’t want to force them to install another app on their phones. That’s where the idea of using their phones’ IP addresses came in. I thought, why not leverage their existing network usage to trigger smart home activities without needing the Vera app?

Here’s what I envision: when a family member’s phone connects to our home Wi-Fi, Vera automatically detects their presence and triggers certain actions—like turning on lights, adjusting the thermostat, or even starting a coffee maker. It’s similar to geofencing, but without the need for additional apps or location sharing. Plus, it would eliminate the privacy concerns they have about geofencing.

I’ve started experimenting with Reactor, and while I can manually input IP addresses, I’m not sure how to automate this process. Is there a way to have Vera automatically detect when a new device connects to the network and associate it with a specific family member? Also, how reliable is this method? I’m worried about false triggers or delays in detecting the devices.

Another thing I’m curious about is how this would work with multiple devices. I have three family members, each with their own phone. Would I need to set up separate triggers for each, or is there a more efficient way to handle this? I’d love to hear from anyone who’s tried something similar or has tips on how to make this setup more seamless.

On a related note, I’ve heard about some advanced automation techniques using third-party apps or services, but I’d prefer to keep everything within Vera if possible. I’m also wondering if there are any security considerations I should be aware of when tracking IP addresses. Privacy is important, and I want to ensure that this setup doesn’t compromise our network security.

Overall, I’m really excited about the potential of this idea, but I need some guidance to make it work smoothly. If anyone has experience with this or can point me in the right direction, I’d be grateful! Thanks in advance for your insights and suggestions.
