I’m about to switch my U200 on my front door with a U400, and am moving the U200 to the garage. I’m thinking about wiring the controller - I bought a 24V .5 amp adapter and am planning on wiring with AWD18 gauge for about 9 ft of run.
Anyone do the same? Do you leave the batteries in the controller? Any other gotchas?

Sure, using the U200 keypad wired is the best
Wiring it up is the best idea. Especially if you have a doorbell, like the G400 or G410. You can run both off the power.
As for retaining batteries, you can do that as a potential backup should you have a power outage.
Did you leave the batteries in when wired or do you need to take them out?
Should work both. But at my home there’s no need to put batteries inside

This is an interesting question and needs some analysis. If there is a disconnect between the external and internal power sources (battery/power supply) then everything is OK. And if there is not, then a critical situation may arise that can damage the remote control (in the worst case) or temporarily disable it.

as far as I know, rechargeable batteries should be fine! But true… @KinseyCreateGoods is definitely the answer
