U200 Samrt Lock - UK locks

Hey! Has anyone got any first hand experience with the U200 and how it works with UK door locks as they are quite different to US ones. Mainly in the fact you have to put the handle up to part lock before you can use your(traditional) key.

Is it smart enough to detect the handle being put up?

Thanks in advance, I want one of these so bad haha

Hello @ashleytaaffe
Unfortunately, I have a UK lock, but I know that @UKAndyC should definitely know something about this.

Hi there, I have a lot of experience with this lock and I can tell you that it is definitely worth getting even for a multi point lock. It is not “ smart enough to recognise the handle is not lifted” , however if you get into the habit of lifting the handle every time you close the door, it soon becomes a routine procedure. If you wish, I can direct you to my video that I did on the U200. One thing to note, however, I would definitely provision an adapter so that they keypad can be wired directly into the mains and also you definitely won’t a euro cylinder lock that can be opened from the outside while the key is inserted on the inside.

I like the idea of a smart lock but having spent several months using the smart doorbell using batteries I’m not convinced it will be A: stable enough and B: last long enough between replacing batteries. I am about to switch the G4 doorbell over to hardwired so we will see if that improves the stability. I have to assume it will at least improve the speed of connection etc. I can live with that in a doorbell. I’m not sure I’d want to wait the couple of seconds for my lock to ‘create connection’ then do whatever I’m asking of it.

Is there a lock available that will work with a standard Yale night latch?

It is definitely a good move to hardwire the G4 doorbell as I have noticed a significant improvement. As for the U200 smart lock, I have the keypad wired also. The delay is pretty much non-existent when using either fingerprint or Apple Home key. Also, if you add a door and window sensor and run the automation, “ when the door sensor closes, lock the door”, then the locking automation is also instant

I am unsure if one of the smart locks will work with the Yale night latch lock, however you could always replace the lock with a standard lock which is quite cheap nowadays and then use the smart lock

Amazing! For some reason I had the feeling this would be the case. If you have the link for the video that would be amazing. Thanks for replying, much appreciated

This is a a really cool idea, in terms of adding door sensors etc. how have you found the geo-fencing - I use Apple Home

I run the doorbell on mains, and it runs extremely well. You can then run the lock on mains… well the keypad. The lock still runs on battery, but it does last. long time.

here’s my implementation: Keeping it secure in the UK (Part 3) - Aqara G4 Doorbell and Aqara U200 door lock

I wired the G4 and use 2x U200 on batteries. they last about 2-3 months. and charge very fast. good enough to not be much of a bother

I see that Aqara sell a lock barrel on Amazon. Is that what you mean? Thanks

For me it has been a good experience. Apple’s geofencing works brilliantly and Aqara’s is catching up quickly in my testing.

It would all depend on your type of door/existing lock as to if that would work. If you could provide a picture or video of the internals it would make it clearer. Alternatively you could check out Shane Wheatley, Stu’s reviews, HomeKit Authority or my channel (Andysreviewsandsmarthometips) on YouTube to get a better idea.

Thanks for sharing that @siobhanellis. very helpful. If I decide to implement I may be in touch with any troubleshooting!

I can confirm, I have the U200 and the U200 lite on our front and back door door. They as UKAndyC has stated are not clever enough to know you have pulled up the handle and will detect a jam if you haven’t. But as we have to lift the handle before locking our doors anyway, it is no real issue.

Unlocking working perfectly as you’d expect as once the key is turned, which is basically all this lock does, the door is then unlocked.

You still need to pull the handle down to gain entry so there is still an element of manual action needed but I find it’s great when you’ve been to the shops and you arms are loaded up with stuff your missus has bought, that you can unlock the door with Siri then just lean on the handle to get in without having to fumble with keys.

I also find the fact you can use your Apple Watch / finger print to lock / unlock this an absolute must.

Makes it so much more convenient than faffing with keys.

I hope this helps you decide, Amazon has a lonely back guarentee so if you’re not entirely happy, you can return.

I can 100% relate to this analogy, it is so handy being able to do this. :joy::joy:

Thanks so much for that. I am absolutely getting one. Currently I have treated every radiator to an Aqara thermostat so this is in my Amazon Prime basket for next pay day
