Hi all — hoping someone can sanity-check me here.

I just picked up the Aqara U400. This is my first Aqara device. My home setup is Apple-only (latest Apple TV 4K, iPhones, etc.). I do not have any dedicated Matter hub - just the Apple TV. My understanding was that the Apple TV can act as a Matter hub, so I didn’t buy a separate Aqara hub.

Here’s where I’m stuck:
• I’ve successfully added the U400 to Apple Home and it works fine there (UWB unlock, passcodes, etc.).
• However, when I try to add the lock inside the Aqara app, it scans the QR code and then tells me I’m missing a Matter hub.
• Because of that, I can’t access certain configuration options in the Aqara app — for example, setting up fingerprints.

What’s confusing me is that I’ve seen reviews and comments from other users suggesting they can configure fingerprints and other settings in the Aqara app without a dedicated Aqara hub, using Apple TV as the hub.

So my question is:
• Am I misunderstanding how this is supposed to work?
• Do I actually need an Aqara hub just to manage things like fingerprints in the Aqara app?
• Or is there a specific pairing/order/setup step I’ve missed?

Any guidance appreciated — I feel like I’m 90% there but missing one key detail.

Dear Users, we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused. Firstly, please note that you do not need an Aqara Thread-enabled Matter Controller (e.g., Hub M3) to bind the U400 to the Aqara Home app.

After setting up your Smart Lock U400 in the Apple Home app, you can bind it to the Aqara Home app via Bluetooth by following these steps:

Check Points:

  1. Bluetooth must be enabled during the binding process.
  2. Your Aqara account region is set to one of the supported regions: United States, Canada, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.
    (In Aqara Home app, go to “Profile”> Settings > Region to change your environment)
  3. Make sure the network is available on your phone.
  4. Ensure the Aqara Home app is running the latest version.

Binding to Aqara Home app via bluetooth:

  1. Press the Set button once on the lock to enter pairing mode.
  2. Open the Aqara Home app, tap “Add Accessory”, find Smart Lock U400 under Smart Door Lock, and scan the Aqara MagicPair code on the lock.
  3. Follow the app instructions to complete the setup.

Note:
You can also add fingerprints and passwords directly on the U400 lock

  1. Press the Set button once to enter door lock setup mode.
  • If the lock is already bound to the Aqara Home app, you will need Admin credentials to access this mode.
  1. Press “1” to add fingerprints and passwords.
