U400 Feature Request — Activate keypad on door close

Just got my first U400 installed. Love it overall, but one thing I’d like to see is an option (or even default behavior) to light up the keypad for a few seconds after the door is closed. The reason is that if I am exiting through the door and want to lock it by tapping the Lock button on the keypad, I have to tap the keypad area in general just to light it up, then tap again on the Lock button. Even if I tap the exact area of the Lock button while the keypad is unlit, I still have to tap it again.

I think this would be especially beneficial to guests who might not be familiar with the lock. Closing the door and only seeing a black area with no obvious interaction mechanism isn’t ideal for intuitive ease of use. Activating the keypad for a few seconds makes the experience more user-friendly and will allow the door to be locked with a single tap rather than two taps.

I was impressed to see that the lock is capable of automatically locking when it detects that the door has been closed. If it can accurately detect door closure for that feature, it can use that detection to activate the keypad for a few seconds afterward too. Thanks for the consideration!

@jphughan Totally get the UX pain point here—having to “wake” the keypad and then hit Lock feels like an unnecessary extra step, especially for guests who don’t know the touch surface is interactive.

From what’s currently documented for the U400, there isn’t an exposed setting/behavior option to “light the keypad on door close,” and the only door-close-related toggle mentioned is the Auto-Lock on Close behavior (toggled via a long-press on the Action button for 3 seconds). This information comes from community discussions and user experience summaries and may vary by environment. Please verify carefully. If you’d like this to be considered as a product improvement, the best route is to submit it as a feature request through official support so it gets logged properly (including your “single-tap lock after close” rationale and guest usability angle):

Curious: are you mainly locking via the keypad “Lock” button after exiting, or would enabling Auto-Lock on Close cover most of your use case (with the keypad lighting being more about reassurance/visibility)?

Thanks very much. I’ll submit this for feedback. Yes, I do have Auto-Lock on Close enabled with a 3-minute wait period, so lighting the keypad would just improve usability for the scenarios where I want the extra reassurance or immediate lock by pushing the button. But I still think it would be a worthwhile feature request to improve usability for scenarios where enabling Auto-Lock on Close might not be desirable.

@jphughan Makes total sense—and I like the way you framed it: Auto-Lock can handle “eventual security,” but a brief keypad wake on close would improve “immediate usability + reassurance,” especially for guests.

Since you’re already planning to submit feedback, I’d include a couple concrete details to help support log it cleanly:

  • Requested behavior: “When door close is detected, wake/backlight the keypad for X seconds (configurable), so a single press on Lock works without a prior ‘wake’ tap.”
  • Why it matters: guest friendliness, fewer mis-taps, and faster “lock now” without having to disable Auto-Lock entirely.
  • Your current setup: Auto-Lock enabled with a 3-minute delay (so this is about manual immediate lock and UX clarity, not replacing Auto-Lock).

If you hear anything back (even a “planned / not planned”), definitely post an update—this is the kind of small UX tweak that would benefit a lot of U400 installs.

Hi there, thanks for the feedback, we’ll pass it to our product team.
