U400 Smartlock - Which Hub to use

Can I use the U400 with just a Home pod Mini as the Border Router? And if so will I have full functionality of all features? I want to be able to use apple HomeKey and basically everything! Or… will I need an Aqara hub as well? I read it may need a Aqara hub for firmware updates.

Dear user, a single HomePod mini is sufficient to enable the U400’s most powerful features, including:

  • UWB “Hands-Free” Unlocking: Unlock your door just by approaching it.
  • Apple Home Key: Tap your iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock.
  • Remote Control: Manage your lock from anywhere via the Apple Home app.
  • Family Sharing: Easily share access or “Home” permissions with your family members.

Maximizing Features with the Aqara Home App:

Even without an Aqara Hub, we highly recommend adding your U400 to the Aqara Home app via Bluetooth. This allows you to use the app locally (when you are near the lock) to customize advanced settings, such as:

  • Door-Status Auto-Lock: Set the door to lock automatically only when the sensor detects it is actually closed.
  • One-Time Passwords: Create temporary codes for guests or service providers.
  • Fast Firmware Updates: Perform Bluetooth OTA updates directly from your phone in just a few minutes—no hub required!

We recommended that: If you don’t own an Aqara Hub, use the Apple Home app for your primary remote control and UWB unlocking, and use the Aqara Home app locally to fine-tune your lock’s settings and keep your firmware up to date.

For your convenience, I’ve attached a guide below that explains how to bind the U400, as well as the differences between firmware updates through Aqara Home and Apple Home.
