Hey ,
So I’ve been deep in the Aqara world for a bit now, and I know a ton of people hesitate jumping in because they think it’s “too Apple.” But I’m here to tell you, that’s not the case — you can absolutely build a solid Aqara-based smart home without owning a single Apple device. I’ve done it myself.
I’m an Android + Home Assistant kinda guy, no iPhone, no HomePod, nothing Apple-ish in sight. Still, I’ve managed to run Aqara gear (sensors, switches, camera G3, you name it) smoothly in my setup. Here’s what worked for me:
-
Hub selection is key – I went with the Aqara Hub M2 (Ethernet model), completely standalone and works well with Aqara app + Google/Alexa + HA. It bridges all Zigbee child devices and plays nice with multiple ecosystems.
-
Home Assistant FTW – I use ZHA with a Sonoff/Zigbee2MQTT stick and repurposed my G3 cam just for automation triggers (since HA doesn’t fully stream video from it). Zigbee devices just show up cleanly in HA through the hub or stick depending on your setup.
-
Google Home + Aqara app = surprisingly smooth – Motion sensors, door sensors, etc., all show up in Google Home for basic routines. Sure, it’s not as “deep-dive” as Apple HomeKit, but for voice control and automation it gets the job done.
-
IFTTT still has some life – For not into HA, connecting Aqara to IFTTT and bridging to other ecosystems like SmartThings can be a hacky but working option.
-
Cloud dependency warning – Some integrations need internet access. Just heads up if you’re big on local-only setups. Home Assistant helps a lot with that.
Anyway, I wanted to drop this here because I know how many people shy away from Aqara thinking you need an iPhone or iPad to get it going. Not true at all. Would love to hear what setups you’ve all built — especially any clean Google-only scenes or if anyone got full camera integration working in HA.
Let’s build smarter setups that don’t cost a kidney or worship the Apple logo.
Cheers!
