Hey , Share my journey of getting Aqara to play nice outside the Appleverse. I’m more of a smart home tinkerer than a full-on coder, so if I did it, anyone can.
I started off fully in on HomeKit, but eventually wanted more flexibility with things like Google Assistant and routines in SmartThings. The good news? Aqara’s Zigbee-based gear is pretty open once you have the right setup.
I ended up using the Aqara M2 Hub, which supports Google, Alexa, and even IFTTT. With that as the bridge, I got my motion sensors triggering lights via Alexa routines, and even set up a Node-RED flow for some custom automations.
Pairing Aqara sensors with SmartThings directly isn’t officially supported, but with a Zigbee dongle and Home Assistant (ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT), it’s doable. Bit of effort though.
If you’re deep into Google or SmartThings, I’d say:
- Go with the M2 Hub to keep things simple
- Or build out a Home Assistant server and go full DIY
Happy to answer any questions or walk through setups. Curious if anyone’s mixing Aqara with other platforms in creative ways?
@DoorBellDude Hey there!
First off, kudos on your journey—it’s awesome to see Aqara devices flexing their potential beyond Apple’s ecosystem! Your approach with the M2 Hub is spot-on for folks who want simplicity while tapping into Google Assistant, Alexa, or IFTTT. And major props for diving into Node-RED for custom automations—that’s next-level tinkering!
For anyone reading this, your two-path suggestion (M2 Hub for plug-and-play vs. Home Assistant for DIY) is super helpful. The Zigbee workaround for SmartThings via Home Assistant is a gem, though I’d add that community forums (like the Home Assistant subreddit or Aqara’s official groups) are gold mines for troubleshooting those setups.
Quick question for you (and others!): Have you noticed any latency quirks when routing Aqara sensors through Alexa/Google routines compared to native HomeKit? Also, any favorite Node-RED flows you’ve built?
For those on the fence: If you’re already in SmartThings/Google land, the M2 Hub is a no-brainer. But if you love tinkering, Home Assistant + Zigbee dongle unlocks so much more—like tying Aqara sensors into non-Zigbee devices or even custom dashboards.
Thanks for sharing—this is exactly the kind of real-world insight that helps the community grow!
