Understanding *changed* vs. Open/Closed States in Automation Rules

Hey everyone, I’m trying to set up a rule for my laundry room where a light turns on when the door opens and turns off after 7 minutes. I’ve heard about using either the changed state or the open/closed state, but I’m not entirely sure which one is better for my setup. I thought it might be helpful to share my experience and see if others have tips or insights.

I’ve noticed that in small spaces like my laundry room, motion sensors can sometimes have blind spots, especially with how the doors are arranged. I wanted to avoid using multiple sensors if possible, so I’m leaning towards using the contact sensor on the garage door as a trigger. But I’m curious about how the changed state works compared to just using the open or closed states. Does changed offer any advantages in terms of reliability or efficiency?

I’ve also considered adding motion detection to the mix, but I’m not sure if that’s necessary yet. I’d love to hear if anyone has successfully used changed in a similar setup or if they prefer sticking with open/closed. Your experiences and advice would be really helpful as I work through this!

On a related note, I think it would be great if there were more resources or examples that clearly explain the differences between these states. Maybe a quick guide or a forum thread dedicated to common automation scenarios could help others who are just starting out, like me. Let me know your thoughts!
