Understanding Matter Device Networking: IPv4 and IPv6 Considerations

I’ve been diving into the world of Matter devices lately, and I’m really excited about the potential they hold for seamless integration across my smart home setup. Recently, I came across an interesting observation with my TP-Link Matter Light Switch (Tapo S505D). After successfully commissioning it through Home Assistant (HA) using a QR code, I noticed that the device shows both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses in the HA Device Info section. Additionally, my DHCP server also lists an IPv4 lease for this device.

This got me thinking—since Matter is designed to operate over IPv6, I was under the impression that IPv4 might not be necessary. However, seeing both addresses makes me wonder: is this behavior expected? Does the presence of an IPv4 address affect the advantages that Matter is supposed to offer, such as enhanced security and reliability?

I’d love to hear from others in the community who have experience with Matter devices. Are there any best practices or insights regarding IPv4 and IPv6 usage with Matter? Should I be concerned about the IPv4 lease, or is this a standard part of the setup process? Any guidance or experiences shared would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and insights!
