Understanding VLANs for Home Automation Security

Hey everyone, I’m diving into the world of networking basics to better secure my home automation setup. I’ve got all my hubs, including the Hue hub, connected to a POE switch, and I’m curious about how this setup impacts security and segmentation.

My Questions:

  • Are all devices connected to this switch essentially part of a single VLAN?
  • If I add another switch, would that create a separate VLAN?
  • Is placing my Home Automation equipment on a switch an effective way to isolate it from my main Wi-Fi network?
  • Does creating VLANs help in preventing unauthorized access to my smart devices?

I’m not planning to implement this anytime soon, but understanding the underlying concepts is key to ensuring my setup is secure. I’ve also been looking into networking books and resources, but it’s overwhelming to know which ones are reliable. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your insights and experiences!
