So I’ve been messing with my Aqara setup for a while, and honestly, I wasn’t ready to jump all-in with Apple’s HomeKit “walled garden” just to get things to work smoothly. I’m more of a tinker-and-see kind of guy, and I wanted flexibility. If anyone else out there doesn’t have an iPhone glued to their hand 24/7, this might be helpful.
I started playing around with third-party platforms — mainly Home Assistant and a bit of Hubitat — and wow, turning Aqara devices into fully customizable smart gear is absolutely doable. Took a little bit of time to get everything paired right (the Zigbee integrations can be picky sometimes), but once it was dialed in, it opened SO many new options.
Like, I have an Aqara motion sensor tied to a Tapo plug through Home Assistant, turning on my coffee machine when I walk into my kitchen between 6-8AM. Can’t even do that natively with Aqara Home app unless it’s within their own brand/stuff. Now my setup’s working better than any stock HomeKit scene I ever tried. No Apple hub, no iCloud, no problem.
Just sharing this for anyone frustrated by the Apple requirement. You don’t have to be stuck if you’re not in that ecosystem. Anyone else running Aqara gear outside of the Apple bubble? Would love to see how others are setting things up.
