Unlocking the Full Potential of Aqara in a Non-Apple Universe

Hey folks, just wanted to drop in and share my journey using Aqara without being tied into the Apple ecosystem. Yep — no iPhones, no iPads, no HomeKit here. Just a good ol’ Android phone, Alexa, and a bit of stubbornness.

When I first jumped into smart home stuff, all the Aqara tutorials and reviews seemed Apple-heavy. I almost gave up, thinking it wouldn’t play nice with my setup. But turns out, Aqara is a lot more flexible than people give it credit for.

I started with the M2 hub, paired it with Alexa, and boom — doors, sensors, switches, all running smooth. I used Aqara’s own app at first, but then added some custom automations in Alexa and even dabbled with Home Assistant for better control.

My biggest win? Creating routines where my door lock triggers lights and alerts, without needing HomeKit at all. It took some fiddling, but totally doable once you get into the Alexa routines and Virtual Switch hacks.

So yeah, if you’re in a Google/Alexa world and feeling left out — don’t be. Aqara’s got your back with a bit of tweaking. Anyone else running a fully Apple-free Aqara setup? Would love to see how far folks have pushed it.
