Upgrading My HA Setup: Thoughts and Experiences

After running Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi 4B for quite some time, I’ve been contemplating an upgrade. While the Pi has served me well, I’m planning to add an NVR with 4 cameras and explore more AI-driven features like speech-to-text and image recognition. This has led me to consider a small form factor PC for better performance.

I’ve narrowed it down to two options: an Intel Core i5-8400 with 32GB RAM and 128GB SSD, or an Intel Core i7-6700 with the same RAM and storage. Both allow for future GPU expansion, which I might need for more intensive tasks. My main questions are: which CPU offers better value for my intended use case, and will this setup be sufficient for my growing HA ecosystem?

I’ve also been exploring ways to integrate my smart home devices more seamlessly. For instance, using Vera Proximity and PLEX to automate hallway lights based on geofencing has been a fun project. It’s amazing how these integrations can enhance daily routines without much hassle.

Another area I’m curious about is optimizing my HA setup for better performance. With the recent update to 2025.9.1, I noticed some instability, which prompted me to look into backup strategies. I’ve been backing up to Google Drive, but I’m wondering if there are more robust methods or if others have encountered similar issues post-update.

Overall, I’m excited about the potential of upgrading my hardware and exploring new integrations. It’s a great feeling to see how technology can make home automation more intuitive and enjoyable. If anyone has insights or tips on these topics, I’d love to hear them!
