Using an Aqara U200 to trigger a Cleaner Mode in Home Assistant

I’ve integrated my Aqara U200 into Home Assistant through Matter and use its lock state as part of a “Cleaner Mode” for the house.

The idea is to have the house adapt when the cleaners arrive, without manually switching several things over.

During the expected arrival window, Home Assistant looks for a sequence:

  • A vehicle is detected on the driveway.
  • A person is detected at the front door.
  • The U200 changes to unlocked.

The steps have timeouts, so vehicle detection alone doesn’t activate the mode. This is an inference based on several events, rather than identifying a particular user from the lock.

Once Cleaner Mode starts, it sends a notification, opens the bathroom and en-suite blinds, enables a guest-mode helper and temporarily pauses selected automations that could get in the way.

For departure, a separate automation watches for the door locking and then vehicle detection clearing during the expected departure window. It turns Cleaner Mode off and re-enables the selected automations.

There’s also a scheduled fallback and an actionable reminder in case the mode stays on.

What I like about this is that the U200 becomes one part of a wider household routine. Home Assistant handles the coordination between the lock, detection sensors, blinds and other automations.

Is anyone else using their Aqara lock as an input to a visitor or cleaner mode? I’d be interested in how you distinguish a genuine departure from someone briefly stepping outside.

@phiebs This is a really clever setup! Using the U200’s lock state as one node in a broader inference chain—rather than relying on any single sensor—is exactly the kind of thing that makes Home Assistant powerful. The timeout-gated sequence (vehicle → person → unlock) is a smart way to avoid false triggers, and the scheduled fallback shows you’ve thought through the edge cases.

On the departure side, distinguishing a brief step-out from a real leave is always the tricky part. A few approaches that tend to work well:

  • Presence sensor persistence: If you have an FP2 or similar in the entryway, requiring “no presence for X minutes” after the lock event before flipping Cleaner Mode off can help. The FP2 supports “Absence for some time” as an automation trigger, which you could fold into your departure sequence.

  • Lock method as a signal: If your cleaners use a specific method (e.g., a periodic password rather than HomeKey), the U200 logs unlock methods and you could weight departure confidence differently based on how the door was re-locked.

  • Vehicle dwell time: Instead of just “vehicle clears,” requiring that the vehicle remain absent for a few minutes after locking can catch the “stepped out to grab something from the car” case.

Since you’re running through Matter, the U200’s state should be pretty responsive in HA. Have you found any noticeable lag in the lock state propagating, or does it stay well within your timeout windows?

Love seeing the U200 used as household orchestration glue rather than just a lock—great share

The responsiveness is near instant. Certainly not perceivable for me!
The point you made about logging the method of unlock is interesting - not sure I see this unless it was a recent update? I see it on the Aqara app but not in Home Assistant, is that expected?

@phiebs Hi phiebs! It’s great to hear that the Matter integration is providing that near-instant responsiveness you were hoping for.

Regarding your question about the unlock method logs: The Aqara U200 does support various unlocking methods like HomeKit, Aqara Home, passwords, and NFC. However, the availability of specific log details (such as the exact method used) in Home Assistant can vary depending on how the Matter integration exposes those specific attributes. While the Aqara Home App definitely captures this data, Home Assistant might only expose the binary lock state or basic event triggers via Matter, rather than the granular log attributes.

Since this involves specific integration behavior that might depend on your HA version or Matter bridge configuration, and to ensure you get the most accurate technical guidance for your setup, I recommend reaching out to our support team.
