My home is 1st and foremost an Apple Home. It does have quite. bit of Aqara Product in there although the integration between Aqara and Apple Home is using the Homekit interface rather than Matter as I want the Alarm capability and I don’t have an Air Conditioner (I live in the UK, so heat is basically not a problem… yet!)
So, where does Matter come in?
I already had a bunch of Door & Window Contact Sensors from Eve, and I migrated those to Matter. By doing that, I now have the ability to see those not just in home kit, but in the Aqara M3 bridge as that is also a Matter Controller. I can mix those Eve contact sensors with the Aqara ones I also have, as well as the Aqara Door locks.
This has enabled me to build a home alarm system using what I already have, but augmenting it with Aqara, thus keeping the cost down as I didn’t have to replace existing product. That alarm appears in my Apple Home so I can turn it on when we all leave the house.
Also, I have been able to add other vendor lights to the Aqara Hub via Matter, so I can then use the Aqara switch to turn on/off non-Aqara Smart Lights but not disconnect power. Again, saving me money as I can utilise product I already have.
I wrote it all up in my blog (This is not paid for) The Aqara M3 - how useful is it? Pretty Useful. Probably not in the way expected.
