Using Motion Sensors and Sound Playback for Home Security

I’ve been exploring ways to enhance my home security system using smart devices, and I came across an interesting idea that I’d like to share and discuss with the community. The concept is to use a motion sensor in conjunction with a sound playback device to deter potential intruders. Here’s how I envision it working:

The Setup:

  • Motion Sensor: I plan to use an Aqara motion sensor, which I’ve heard great things about. It’s reliable and integrates well with my existing Google Nest ecosystem.
  • Sound Playback Device: I already have a Google Nest Display outside the room I want to protect. The idea is to play a pre-recorded deterrent sound if no motion is detected for an hour and the door contact sensor is open.

The Goal:
I want to create a system where, if the door is open and there’s been no motion for an hour, the Google Nest Display plays a pre-saved sound to scare off any potential intruders. This could be a simple alarm tone or even a recorded message like, ‘Security system activated.’

Current Progress:
I’ve set up the door contact sensor and motion sensor, but I’m still working on the automation rules. I’m using the Google Home app to configure the triggers and actions. I’m curious if anyone has experience with similar setups and if there are any potential pitfalls or optimizations I should consider.

Questions for the Community:

  1. Does anyone have experience with using sound playback as a deterrent? What types of sounds have been effective?
  2. Are there any specific apps or services that integrate well with Google Nest devices for this kind of automation?
  3. How reliable is the motion sensor in terms of false triggers? I’d hate to have the system going off accidentally.

I’m really excited about this project and would love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Let’s brainstorm together and make home security smarter and more effective!
